A: Adult learners, counselors, social workers, personnel managers, employers, or family members of an adult learner call the Hotline or search the Directory. Volunteers interested in tutoring and teaching opportunities also use these services.

Q: What happens when I call the hotline?
A : Whether calling for adult literacy services or volunteer opportunities, you will be referred to programs that meet your needs and interests.
Q: Why do I need to call the local program after I call the hotline?
A : Calling the hotline gives you access to information about the state's many adult literacy services. However, each adult literacy program operates independently. When you call a local program, you will be able to schedule a time to meet with program staff and learn more about the services offered.
Q: What happens when I search the online directory?
A : Whether searching for services or volunteer opportunities, you will see a list of conveniently located programs that meet your needs and interests. Write down or print out the information provided, and then contact the programs that interest you most.
Q: Can I get a complete list of local programs?
A : Because the database contains more than a hundred programs and is updated constantly, we do not give out a list. Instead, you can search for programs online using the directory.
Q: When can I call the hotline?
A : You can call the hotline anytime, day or night and leave a message which will be returned as soon as possible. The hotline phone is staffed Monday through Thursday from 9:00 am to 5:00 pm.
Q: How often does the hotline and directory information change?
A : We are committed to providing the most current and accurate information available. Organizations included in the hotline and directory are required to update their information annually and encouraged to update their information whenever changes occur.
Q: Who can enroll in an adult literacy program in Washington?
A : Participants must be age 18 or over, not enrolled in secondary school, and functioning below the level of high school completion in at least one basic academic area, such as reading, math, writing or speaking English.
Q: How are programs selected to be in the directory?
An adult literacy program must meet the following requirements to be included in the directory:
- Offer literacy services to adults (ages 18 and over).
- Offer literacy services to residents, not students, tourists or visitors.
- Be part of a community-based non-profit 501(c)3 organization or a community college.
- Charge students a fee of no more than $50 per quarter.
Participation in the directory means the program agrees to:
- Update program information as it changes.
- Verify or update program information once a year when requested.
- Keep track of how many volunteer and student referrals the program receives because of the listing in the online directory and hotline.
